FAQ

Where is your office?

I currently only conduct sessions via telehealth… so, wherever you are!

Florida clients will always be treated via telehealth, but I have an office coming to Vermont early 2021.

How do I set up an initial appointment?

Call, email, or submit the Contact form through the website.

I will get back to you in the same day and can usually schedule your first session in the same week.

What are your office hours?

Mondays: 9am-5pm
Tuesdays: 12pm-7pm
Wednesdays: 9am-5pm
Thursdays: 8am-4pm

If you need a time outside of these hours, please reach out and we can explore options.

How much do you charge?
I can’t answer that without knowing what services you are looking for, so please give me a call so that I can best answer this question.
Do you take insurance?

I am not in-network with any provider, because insurance companies tend to work against both client and practitioner:

They require a diagnosis and only allow a select few, even if it doesn’t really apply.

They only allow a few interventions to be used, even if they aren’t the most helpful.

They limit frequency and duration of sessions, even if that’s not in line with your treatment plan.

I can, however, provide documentation to submit to your insurance for out-of-network benefits.

With whom do you work?

I work with people age 16 and up – no matter who you are, how you identify, or your relationship status.

So, whether you’re male, female, non-binary, or transgender individual… or a traditional, polyamorous, polygamist, or same-sex couple… you are welcome, and I am happy to work with you.

If you need something I cannot provide, I’ll point you in the right direction.

Do you tell parents what their children say in therapy?

If you’re minor, you do have rights to confidentiality. This will be broken if you share that you want to hurt yourself or someone else, you have been abused, or you have abused someone else.

My initial goal with you as a minor is to coach you on how to share things with their parents/guardians.

If you do not want to, then I will share the necessary information with them and will tell you I’m doing this before the conversation happens.

“My kid needs therapy. I don’t.”

I get that this isn’t a question, but it’s a dilemma I have faced often.

Teens are still part of a family system and are treated as such. You have to be willing to attend some sessions and make changes yourself if you want your teen to succeed as well.

What do you actually do in sessions with your clients?

Magic! Just kidding (but that would be cool).

I take an explorative and inquisitive approach; I try to maintain dialogue and challenge you to think about things you’ve never thought of. (And it is always okay if you don’t have an answer. That’s what therapy is for!)

At times I will ask you to write things down, engage in exercises (always with permission and never forced), or conduct meditations and grounding activities to help you regroup.

Do clients receive assignments to work on between sessions?
Yes. What you do between sessions will matter more than what we work on in sessions. How you apply the insights and skills you gain will determine the success of therapy.
What modalities do you use in your client work?
I am intensively and extensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I also bring in techniques and interventions from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Adventure-Based Counseling, Solution-Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and the Gottman Method.
What is your professional training and experience?

I received my undergraduate degree in Criminology and Psychology from The Florida State University, so I’m a diehard Seminole fan!

I then graduated from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) in May 2018 with a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Florida Atlantic University. I am also a National Board Certified Counselor.

I have worked in both inpatient and outpatient facilities and have been in private practice since March 2020.

Do clients cry during sessions?
I’m not sure. Many complain of getting dust in their eyes, though. 😉
Are you going to lecture me and tell me what I should do?

No. I’m not your parent and don’t want to be.

I will not project my ideals, beliefs, or values onto you. I will help you uncover your own and then help you structure your life accordingly.

Are you perfect? Do YOU do the things you’ll ask of me?

No. And, yes, but not perfectly.

Therapists are fallible human beings just like everyone else. I have moments that are hard and ugly and not handled well. However, I do seek my own therapist when needed and do implement skills and have adopted perspectives inherent to the modalities I use. They work.

Can I bring my pet?
I am a HUGE animal lover. Pets that are leashed, crated, restrained, or well-trained are welcome if they help you get through sessions. You are responsible for any damage and/or accidents that may occur.
I can’t stand being cooped up in an office. What are my options?
I’m more than happy to conduct sessions outside if weather permits.
I’m a Florida Gator/Miami Hurricane fan. Will you still help me?
Yes. As a true Florida State Seminole, it is in my nature to help even those who are misguided in their sport loyalties.
Can you read my mind?

Wouldn’t that make my job so much easier!!

No. And I’m not diagnosing everything you’re saying, either. Not everyone qualifies for a diagnosis, and you don’t have to have one to go to therapy.

Am I not supposed to feel better after therapy?

Therapy is a long-term investment in your happiness; but, as we uncover the pain you’ve been avoiding, it will hurt, and you may not feel the best leaving sessions.

I’ll help you learn how to tolerate this distress, and you will start to feel better as we process those unresolved issues.

I’m dreading coming to our session, and I want to play hooky. What should I do?

This probably means we are doing heavy work, and you need the session now more than ever.

Come anyway.

Tell me if you’re feeling this way, and we can address it in session and have a recovery session rather than a processing session.
